Do dogs like photo shoots

One of the most important things to keep in mind when working with dogs during a photo shoot is to be patient and work with their personalities to get beautiful images.

For example, when doing a photo shoot at my studio in North Ogden Utah, I give the doggies 10-15 minutes to smell everything and have time to familiarize themselves with their surroundings. I put furniture and other props, that have other dog smells on it, behind a gate to help prevent the dog becoming overwhelmed or stressed.

I work on gaining their trust through positive reinforcement to help them feel comfortable before I even bring out my camera and equipment. Once I do bring out my lighting equipment, I work with the dogs to help desensitize them to the strobe light flash.

The photo shoot could last anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 hours because I go off the dogs comfort level and how many breaks they need.

Yes, that does seem like a long time for a photo shoot session but the last thing I want is for them to associate fear with a photo shoot (like going to the vet). I do my best to make it fun with lots of positive reinforcement, treats, love and patience.

Dogs also sense the energy of those around them and the energy of the photo shoot. If we stay calm, happy and relaxed, the doggies will pick up on that.
